McMurdo Station

McMurdo Station, originally built by the Navy, but now operated by the National Science Foundation, is the major logistics hub for U.S. sponsored field research in Antarctica. The base houses scientists studying everything from Penguins to cosmic rays. Scientists deploying to the deep field to study ice flow pass through McMurdo to collect NSF provided gear, which includes everything from camp stoves to snowmobiles.

C-141 Flight to McMurdo
Access to McMurdo for most people is via a miltary cargo flight from Christchurch, New Zealand. The U.S. National Science Foundation has cooperative agreements with the US and New Zealand Air Forces to provide this transport. This system also provides air support for New Zealand's, Scott Base, immediately adjacent to McMurdo Station.
